The Beginning
The establishment of Mohamed Jamaluddin School in 1992 was a significant milestone for Gn. Fuvahmulah and its community. As the school opened its doors on November 3, 1992, local families and leaders rallied to support the new institution. The school was named after the revered Islamic scholar Sheikh Mohamed Jamaluddin (Naib Thuththu), reflecting the community's respect for educational and religious heritage.
In its early years, MJS started as a primary school serving children from across Fuvahmulah's wards (Dhadimagu, Dhiguvaandu, Hoadhadu, and Maadhadu). The community played an active role — from advocating for the school's creation to contributing resources — to ensure children had access to schooling on the island.
Early on, the school faced challenges typical of a growing institution: limited classrooms and resources meant classes had to be held in rotation, with over 400 students sharing just 12 classrooms by the mid-2010s. Despite these hurdles, the dedication of local educators and international partners led to key improvements. For example, a Japan-funded project in 2015–2016 provided a new two-story classroom block, relieving overcrowding.
Early milestones such as expanding to secondary grades by 2016 (allowing students to continue up to grade 10 at MJS) and shifting to a single-session schedule in 2023, marked the school's evolution. Throughout "the beginning" period, the strong collaboration between the Fuvahmulah community and the school set a foundation of support and resilience. This foundation helped MJS grow from a humble start into a "successful primary school" and later a full-fledged secondary school, fulfilling the island's educational needs while honoring the legacy of its namesake scholar.
